Relating Energetic Ion Spectra to Energetic Neutral Atoms

چکیده

Abstract Heliospheric energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) originate from ions that are neutralized by charge exchange with in the heliosheath and very local interstellar medium (VLISM). Since unaffected electromagnetic fields, they propagate ballistically same speeds as parent particles. Consequently, measurements of ENA distributions allow one to remotely image ion VLISM. The origin spawn ENAs is still debated, particularly at energies higher than ∼keV. In this work, we summarize five possible sources cover energy a few keV hundreds keV. Three related pickup (PUIs): those PUIs transmitted across heliospheric termination shock (HTS), reflected once or multiple times HTS, i.e., PUIs, multiply further accelerated HTS. Two other kinds can be considered suprathermal tail PUI distribution particles By way illustration, use these particle distributions, taking account their evolution heliosheath, calculate intensities analyze characteristics spectra observed 1 au.

Are the sungrazing comets the inner source of pickup ions and energetic neutral atoms?

We show arguments that at least part of the inner source of pickup ions and energetic neutral atoms (∼ 1 keV) might be the material released by sungrazing comets. Based on the monthly apparition statistics we postulate that the actual number of sungrazing comets may be even higher than observed. We point out that an overwhelming majority of the observed sungrazers belong to the Kreutz group of ...

Scattering function for energetic neutral hydrogen atoms off the lunar surface

[1] The Sub‐keV Atom Reflecting Analyzer instrument on board the lunar orbiter Chandrayaan‐1 provided a large number of measurements of lunar energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). These ENAs were formerly solar wind ions, which were neutralized and backscattered from the lunar surface. The angles under which the ENAs are scattered strongly depend on the solar wind ions’ incidence angle, which corresp...

Observations and Interpretations of Energetic Neutral Hydrogen Atoms from the December 5, 2006 Solar Event

We discuss recently reported observations of energetic neutral hydrogen atoms (ENAs) from an X9 solar flare/coronal mass ejection event on 5 December 2006, located at E79. The observations were made by the Low Energy Telescopes (LETs) on STEREO A and B. Prior to the arrival of the main solar energetic particle (SEP) event at Earth, both LETs observed a sudden burst of 1.6 to 15 MeV energetic ne...

Energetic neutral atoms as the explanation for the high-velocity hydrogen around HD 209458b.

Absorption in the stellar Lyman-alpha (Lyalpha) line observed during the transit of the extrasolar planet HD 209458b in front of its host star reveals high-velocity atomic hydrogen at great distances from the planet. This has been interpreted as hydrogen atoms escaping from the planet's exosphere, possibly undergoing hydrodynamic blow-off, and being accelerated by stellar radiation pressure. En...

Charting the Interstellar Magnetic Field Causing the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (ibex) Ribbon of Energetic Neutral Atoms

The interstellar magnetic field (ISMF) near the heliosphere is a fundamental component of the solar galactic environment that can only be studied using polarized starlight. The results of an ongoing survey of the linear polarizations of local stars are analyzed with the goal of linking the ISMF that shapes the heliosphere to the nearby field in interstellar space. We present new results on the ...
